Field of Dreams

I ran across this news article today and it really got me thinking. Is Apple the only truly innovative company out there? They came up with the App Store, it became hugely successful, and now every other major player wants to create their version of it as well. Microsoft and Nokia are the latest to declare that they, too, will unveil an “app store” of sorts with their newest mobile phone platforms. Nokia claims that they will have 20,000 “media offerings” in their store when it opens. I think this is deliberately misleading since it includes any video clips and audio files as well as applications. There are millions of “media offerings” on the iPhone if you start counting those types of things. And then there’s Microsoft, who will of course have a strong vetting process and will not be allowing anyone to create applications that discourage the use of Microsoft products. Google and Blackberry have also chipped in their versions which have not been very successful in comparison to Apple. This really seems similar to the whole MP3 player war, which obviously has been won by the iPod. Heck, I’ve talked to a lot of people that use the words iPod and MP3 player to mean the same thing. Regardless, everyone else always seems to be playing catch up to Apple’s latest innovations. The iPod, and now the iPhone, have truly revolutionized the digital media market. I just wonder if any other companies will be stepping up with something new instead of continually playing catch up to Apple’s ideas. The mobile media market is a huge playground waiting to be explored and I think that there are plenty of things to be discovered and innovations to be made. We will definitely see some amazing things come to fruition over the next decade, but will Apple always be the one leading a pack of followers?
